Ormara

Ormara is famous for its road, and it deserves to be famous for far more than that.

The route out of Karachi runs along the N-25 before turning onto the N-10 — the Makran Coastal Highway — through Hingol National Park, an unearthly stretch of desert, mud volcanoes, and wind-carved rock that looks assembled from somewhere other than Pakistan. Kund Malir appears first, a beach considered among the most beautiful in the country, where mountains, desert, and sea collapse into a single view. The road continues over the Makran Coastal Range, and the ocean stays close for most of the way in.

Ormara itself sits at the far end of this — a small port town with a history that reaches back to Alexander's retreat from the Indus, named, as the story goes, for a general of his who died there. It is a place that has been a fishing town, a naval base, and a waypoint on ancient trade routes, often in the same breath. What it offers now is quieter than all of that: a wide, uncrowded beach, a sky that clears completely after dark, and a coastline still working out what it wants to be known for beyond its highway.

The rhythm of the trip follows the coast rather than a schedule: brunch at Winder on the way out, a stop at Kund Malir to take in the view, evening at Ormara, and a sunrise on the beach the next morning before the drive back begins. On the return, the Princess of Hope waits along the highway — a rock formation shaped by nothing but wind and time, said to resemble a woman searching the horizon, and named, by chance, on a passing UN visit.

It is a short trip, but one built almost entirely around the drive — two days spent following the coast to a town most people have only seen from a car window on the way to somewhere else.
